#014: Look To The People Around You For Inspiration
In his timeless work, "Meditations," Marcus Aurelius dedicates the entire first chapter (as it was compiled) to gratitude, specifically for the people around him. He says, "Look around at the people you know and admire, and ask yourself what qualities they have that you admire. Then try to cultivate those qualities in yourself."
We often look to celebrities, historical luminaries, or contemporary entrepreneurial giants for inspiration. But what about the people in our own lives? The people we see every day, the people who know us best?
It can be more challenging to look at the people we know intimately—those we've grown up with, those we see every day, and those who know us inside out—and find a wellspring of inspiration within them. We are so familiar with their flaws and imperfections that it can be easy to overlook their strengths and virtues. However, it is precisely these imperfections that can make them even more inspiring. When we see the good in the people we know, even when it is overshadowed by the bad, it teaches us that we are all capable of greatness, regardless of our shortcomings.
I challenge you to look to the people around you for inspiration. Find within them qualities that you admire. Take kindness, for instance. If you admire someone for their kindness, try to be kinder yourself. If you admire someone for their courage, try to be more courageous yourself.
You must look at them as human, the bad and the good, and appreciate their good. You are not seeking perfection but rather a single admirable trait to nurture within yourself. This practice ensures that inspiration is ever-present and readily accessible within your inner circle.
Finding inspiration in the people around us has many benefits. It can motivate us to be kinder, more courageous, and more compassionate. It can also help us to develop new skills and interests. And it can give us a sense of community and belonging.
So, next time you are feeling down or uninspired, take a look at the people around you. Find within them qualities that you admire and try to emulate them. You may be surprised at how much this simple act can change your perspective and outlook on life.
